Next Level V60 Coffee Brewing: My 2 Best Recipes

If you've been following me for a while, you know by now that I'm crazy about light roast coffees and I often prefer naturals versus washed coffees, but that's a personal preference.

At the time of writing, I've been running this coffee roastery for almost seven years now, and in that time, I've seen, learned, and discovered a lot. I started as a true outsider in the coffee scene.

I have no experience as a barista, coffee roaster, or anything like that, but I'm simply fascinated by coffee and fair trade. That's partly why I've experienced a steep learning curve over the past seven years, constantly improving. And since I make at least three V60 coffees every morning, I've also improved a bit in this area. That's why, in this article, I'm going to share my next-level tips with you to get even more out of your V60.

Why am I doing this? Perhaps you, like me seven years ago, are already one step into your specialty coffee adventure. What I remember is that it's incredibly overwhelming. And that's why I enjoy writing articles about coffee gear, my experiences with brewing coffee, and so on. And I'm sure this article will make you even sweeter V60 coffees. First, I'll briefly explain what the V60 is, and then I'll share two of my favorite methods. I'll also give you the very best tips you can start using NOW to improve your V60 coffee.

What is V60 coffee

V60 coffee refers to a specific method of brewing coffee that uses a cone-shaped coffee filter holder, often made of ceramic, glass, or plastic. This method is known for its ability to bring out the subtle nuances and unique flavors of coffee beans, making it a favorite among coffee lovers worldwide.

The V60's success lies in the simplicity of its technology combined with the precision with which you can influence the coffee's flavor by varying the grind size and the speed at which the water is poured. This flexibility allows both beginners and experienced baristas to brew their perfect cup of coffee, emphasizing the purity of the coffee's flavor and aroma.

Method 1: Quick & Easy

The name says it all, quick and easy. I used this method almost daily until recently. You weigh your coffee and heat your water. After grinding the coffee, put it in the filter, pour in the first 50g of water, and let it bloom for 30 seconds.

Then pour the rest of the water as quickly as possible, all at once. This is quick and creates a relatively short extraction. This brings out the coffee's acidity.

The downside of this method, in my opinion, is that with some coffees, you don't bring out all the flavors. This can lead to a somewhat uneven cup of coffee.

This method is especially suitable for

  • With older coffee, pouring it quickly highlights the acidity and overshadows the "old taste".
  • Coffee that's roasted a bit darker (e.g., a medium roast). These coffees can sometimes be bitter when poured. This quick method minimizes the bitterness.

Quick & easy recipe

  • 12.5-15 grams of medium ground coffee
  • 200 grams of water at 94 ° C
  • Duration 1.30 min.

Step-by-step plan

  • Weigh the coffee and grind it
  • Boil the water to the correct temperature
  • Rinse your V60 filter and discard the residual water
  • Add the coffee to the filter and tare the scale
  • Pour 50 g of coffee for the first 30 sec. bloom
  • After 30 seconds, quickly pour the remaining water through the center onto the coffee bed
  • Stop when the scale reads 200g and let the coffee run through

Is the brewing time longer than 2 minutes? Then grind the coffee coarser. Is the brewing time shorter than 1 minute? Then grind the coffee finer.

Here you go, super fast & easy to make your V60 coffee.

Method 2: Focused and Controlled

I recently started using this method, and I don't regret it at all. It takes a bit more time and focus to implement, but you really get a lot in return.

With this method, you're really focusing on a very sweet, full-bodied cup of filter coffee. This is especially great with a natural brew.

I do recommend choosing a scale for this method that's responsive and preferably has a flow meter, as this allows you to accurately monitor your coffee flow and ensure you're not pouring it too quickly. This Timemore scale is ideal for this purpose.

This method is especially suitable for

  • Natural coffees (personal preference)
  • Super fresh coffee that needs a little more development

Quick & easy recipe

  • 18 grams of medium ground coffee
  • 250 grams of water at 95 ° C
  • Duration 2.30 -2.40 min.

Step-by-step plan

  • Weigh the coffee and grind it
  • Boil the water to the correct temperature
  • Rinse your V60 filter and discard the residual water
  • Add the coffee to the filter and tare the scale
  • Pour 50 g of coffee for the first 30 sec. bloom
  • After 30 seconds, pour 50 g of water in a rotating motion along the outer edges.
  • Then pour 50 g of water into the middle and make sure that you have poured the 50 + 50 g at 0.56
  • 1.15 min. Repeat the above step until your scale reads 250 grams.
  • Let the coffee run and you should be done in about 2:30

Is the brew time longer than 2:40 minutes? Then grind the coffee coarser. Is the brew time shorter than 2:30 minutes? Then grind the coffee finer.

That's it.
