wereld koffiedag, internationale koffiedag

October 1 - International Coffee Day!

Since 2015, an international coffee day has been established on October 1 by ICO (International Coffee Organization).

As cozy as this sounds, this was mainly created for not such pleasant reasons.

Through this day, ICO wants to create attention for all kinds of problems and challenges in coffee country.

Every year there is a slightly different theme on the agenda. I'll tell you more about it in this blog.

This day is also known as World Coffee Day .

Shocking

This article from RTL news from March 2019 states that the price of Arabica beans at that time was less than $ 95 for more than 450 kg.

Now (fortunately for us) this does concern commercial coffees and the sale of green specialty coffee takes place outside this standardized commodity trade.

This is absolutely not what we or our importer pay for our green coffee beans. But the fact is that most coffee that is drunk is not specialty coffee ...

So work on the shop.

This year at ICO

This year's ICO is working to highlight the plight of coffee farmers, the challenge of sustaining their livelihoods and the need to take collective action.

While the price of a cup of coffee at your local coffee shop has never been higher, the amount coffee farmers get paid for the beans they produce is at an all-time low.

Farmers are not earning enough to support themselves and may have to consider not producing coffee at all - putting the future of coffee in jeopardy.

ICO: “The global coffee community is coming together to address this issue, but we also need your help.

We are asking everyone involved in coffee, from producers to roasters, governments, banks and the coffee drinking public to sign the #coffeepledge, in support of a living income for coffee farmers."

Of course we also signed the petition. If you want to know more about this international coffee day, read more here: https://www.internationalcoffeeday.org/

How do you celebrate World Coffee Day?

Good question. Give extra attention to coffee for a day. In our eyes, everything starts with consciousness. Take a look in your kitchen cupboard.

Where does your coffee come from? Which country, which plantation, what do you know about this? Do you really like your coffee? When was it roasted, how was it further processed? What packaging does the coffee come in? How does the coffee smell and taste?

Perhaps you would like to read some product information on the website of your coffee supplier, or some blogs with background information...

Chances are that if you are super conscious about your cup of coffee, you will also form an opinion about it and you will take it with you in the rest of your coffee-drinking career.

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion on this, of course, as long as you are open to the truth behind your cup of coffee.

The most important? Really enjoy of course!
