What is Hario V60

Hario is a Japanese brand, but very popular worldwide! I can say that it really is one of the biggest names in the coffee world…

The Hario V60 owes the part 60 in its name to the 60-degree angle in the cone-shaped dripper.

The ribbed edges on the inside contribute to optimal extraction, because it causes a small rotating movement as the water sinks down through the V60 filter.

In short, a simple tool to make delicious filter coffee.

Hario V60 variants

The Hario V60 Dripper exists in different variants. The most commonly used is plastic and is made of food-safe poly-carbonate and BPA-free.

Also not unimportant of course... With the 02 version you make 1 to 4 cups of coffee. The dripper is robust, durable and dishwasher safe! You will find the plastic version in our webshop.

What do you need to make Hario V60 coffee

Fortunately, you don't need much to make a nice cup of coffee with the Hario V60 and the purchase is super affordable. Partly for this reason, the Hario V60 is one of the most popular slow coffee methods at home.

How do you make coffee with the Hario V60

There are many ways to make a cup of filter coffee with the Hario V60.

The water temperature, the degree of grinding of the coffee and the ratio of coffee and water are important.

Below we use our own Hario V60 recipe.

Step 1: Boil the water

Use (preferably) filtered water and fill your kettle. Use the water at 94 degrees. If you have an adjustable kettle, you can set it to the temperature, or if you use a regular kettle, let the water cool down to this temperature.

Step 2: Insert the filter

Place the filter in the V60 (we currently use a special Light Roast paper filter from Cafec), put it on the jug and rinse with hot water. Empty the jug again. This is important for several reasons: you remove the paper taste as much as possible, your filter paper sticks better in your filter and you preheat your jug!

Step 3: Preheat your cups

Also pour some hot water into cups if you don't have preheated cups.

Step 4: Grind coffee

Grind the coffee as late as possible. The longer the ground coffee is in contact with oxygen, the worse the coffee becomes. So, for example, grind when your water is almost ready for use. Use a medium coarse grind, this is a bit of playing with each coffee to see which grind gives the best result.

Step 5: Coffee in the V60 filter

Add 20 grams of ground coffee to the V60 filter.

Step 6: Bloom

Put the whole on the scale, set the scale to 0 ( tare) and as soon as you start pouring, turn on the timer. Now add 60 grams of water as quickly as possible and let it bloom for 45 seconds. By letting the CO2 escape from freshly roasted coffee, you make the coffee better able to extract afterwards and thus release its flavors as well as possible.

Step 7: Serve

Then pour another 60 grams of water and let it rest for another 45 seconds. Repeat this until you have added a total of 300 grams of water.

Step 8: Stir

Stir the top part 3 times with a spoon.

Step 9: Your V60 filter coffee is ready

Stop at about 3 to 3:30 minutes, my advice is to stop even if the filter has not completely run through. After that, it quickly becomes bitter due to over-extraction.

Step 10: Enjoy your coffee

Pour the coffee into your preheated cup and enjoy your homemade Hario V60 coffee. Enjoy!

Fine-tune your Hario V60 recipe

If the coffee gets bitter you could grind a little coarser and if it's a bit watery you can try a finer grind.

A finer grind results in a better extraction, but depending on the roast level of your coffee, the water may not go all the way through.

You can choose to ignore that and therefore throw away the remainder after 3 to 3.5 minutes and only drink the coffee that has passed through within that time.
