The basis of Cold Brew Coffee

Before we dive into brewing coffee with the Hario Cold Brew Filter-In Bottle, let's briefly review the basics of cold brew coffee. Unlike traditional hot coffee, cold brew is made by steeping ground coffee beans in cold water for an extended period of time. This results in a smooth, less bitter taste. However, the result is very tasty! Cold brew is also great because it's less acidic than traditional coffee, making it easier for those with sensitive stomachs. In this blog we take a closer look at the history of Cold Brew Coffee . Are you already excited? Then read on quickly!

Now that we're familiar with the basics of cold brew coffee, let's turn to the Hario Cold Brew Filter-In Bottle. This handy device has been specially designed to make cold brew coffee simple and efficient. It consists of a bottle made of high-quality glass, a reusable filter and a handy cap. With the Filter-In Bottle you can enjoy your cold brew straight from the bottle and the filter keeps the ground coffee separate from the coffee concentrate.

Now let's discuss Hario's basic recipe. You can find this recipe on the official Hario website . Here are the steps to make your own delicious cold brew coffee using the Hario Cold Brew Filter-In Bottle :

Step 1

Grind 55 grams of your favorite coffee beans. A coarse grind is often recommended, but Hario bases his recipe on a medium fine grind. For best results, we recommend grinding fresh, just before brewing. Put the ground coffee in the filter.

Step 2

Place the filter (with the neck attached) in the bottle without the cap on. Use about 650 ml of cold water for a strong coffee concentrate, so fill the whole bottle. Pour the water slowly.

Step 3

Make sure all the coffee is wet. Gently stir the mixture to ensure that the coffee is thoroughly steeped.

Step 4

Close the bottle with the cap, shake gently and let the mixture steep in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours (or overnight).

Step 5

After the extraction period, remove the Cold Brew bottle from the refrigerator and remove the filter. You will now have a concentrated coffee that you can dilute with water (or milk) to taste. Enjoy your Cold Brew your way!

Variation 1: Cold Brew Coffee Orange

For a real summer success, make your Cold Brew coffee with a small orange infusion. The sweet, juicy taste of the orange will mix with the coffee and provide a refreshing aroma. The steps are fairly similar, but for some inspiration we have listed the steps that belong to this variant.

Step 1

Cut a few slices of orange and put them in the glass jug.

Step 2

Fill the jug with cold water, do not fill it completely because there must still be room for the filter with the ground coffee.

Step 3

Follow the steps of Hario's basic recipe for grinding the coffee, the amount, etc. Place the filter with ground coffee in the jug.

Step 4

Let the mixture steep in the refrigerator for 8 hours (or overnight), as usual.

Step 5

Remove the bottle from the refrigerator, remove the filter and orange slices. Your orange cold brew is now ready to enjoy!

Step 6

Serve with ice cubes, water, or milk (and sugar if desired) and enjoy your Cold Brew! Garnishing with a sprig of mint is delicious and looks nice...

Variation 2: Cold Brew Coffee with milk (spiced)

For milk coffee lovers or for slightly less hot days, you can make your Cold Brew coffee with milk and spices. This fresh yet warming drink (due to the spices) is a nice variation on the above options. The steps are, of course, fairly similar again, but we will briefly explain them here. I also made a small adjustment based on personal preference.

Step 1

Fill the jug with 500 ml of cold (vegetable) milk of your choice (I used Oatly Vanilla) + a tablespoon of condensed milk. Of course you can experiment with this completely freely, a different ratio is also fine! I did 2 to 3 spoons of condensed milk ;-)...

Step 2

Also add the following elements, or other spices as desired, to the jug: half a tablespoon of ground cardamom, a tablespoon of grated ginger and a cinnamon stick. Hario suggests doing this at the end, but I liked it better to let it soak.

Step 3

Follow the steps of Hario's basic recipe for grinding the coffee, the amount, etc. Place the filter with ground coffee in the jug.

Step 4

Let the mixture steep in the refrigerator for 8 hours (or overnight), as usual.

Step 5

Remove the bottle from the refrigerator, remove the filter and solids from the mixture.

Step 6

It is fairly concentrated, so I recommend diluting it with the same milk. I used Oatly Oat Milk Vanilla in my experiment. Serve with ice cubes if desired and possibly add a (new) cinnamon stick for garnish! Enjoy your cold brew.
